In the last 10 years I've been to many council meetings. I go to support our councillors, to find out what council is doing in Gault Ward regarding Budgets, Colonel Light Gardens, and Planning.
Did you know that during the State Government Planning consultation Mitcham Council has spent most of their time tweaking their development plans. This is despite the fact that the development plans will be removed under the new State Planning Code - which is supposed to be a "one size fits all" system. So much for the uniqueness of where we live. The Planning system started by John Rau and continued by Stephan Knoll - wants to make life easier for big land developers.
They have not provided us with a before and after look of what the changes will be. And so far it's ugly. At the moment - only local Heritage items and State Heritage is protected. And it's still not clear how State Heritage will be protected without a reliable Development Plan. We need to let our State MP and local council know that we care about where we live.
I've been to Council Planning (CAP) meetings, Audit Committee Meetings, Briefings and Full Council Meetings - often staying till the very end - under some Mayors that can be pushing past Midnight.
I have watched Councillors and Staff progressively shut out the people of Mitcham. I think this needs to be reversed.
Do you want a ward representative who knows what they are getting into and has the time to commit to reading agendas, talking to outher councillors and making good decisions, someone who already knows the other councillors and management staff? Someone who has been showing up all the time, not just at elections?
I think that's me.
